Painting is an attempt to come to terms with life, George Tooker. I agree with this statement completely. Everyday, before I paint, I feel harsh, negative, and insane. After getting into paint for awhile, I come back to my day feeling more relaxed and less hostile. I become functional and or rational, as rational as one should be.
These paintings to the left and on the right are the result of being highly influenced by two major styles within the past five years; Western post modernism and Eastern Japanime. These two art forms have been having a large impact on the hearts and minds of many individuals in the United states.
Vaguely speaking, western po-mo is based off of nihilist theory which is the belief that there is nothing beyond our physical existence and that the will to gain power and rise above the herd should be the basis of ones life. The question is, waht do you do with that power?
Japanime has been the poster mark for the underground pop culture. A short attention span theater with highly technical drawings. Proto culture the next wave, neo modernism if you will. It is growing and it is dying. I have yet to see anime being supported by acedmia, but the pop culture has been eating it for breakfast.
My current projects involve a culmination of these two styles into a whole. They deal with issues concerning:
Flat Space vs Authentic Space
Left Brain vs Right Brain
Systematic vs Empathetic
Enlightenment vs Darkness
Eastern and Western
