 Laura Christie is a self-taught artist. She uses graphite, colored pencil and acrylics. Her focus is mainly on people and pet portraits. People, because she finds the planes, shadows and shapes of the human face endlessly fascinating and as an avid animal lover, she simply has fun doing pets.She strives to capture the very essence of the pet rather than just a simple rendering of the breed. She has combined graphite, colored pencil and acrylic paints to create striking portraits of people and pets.
Her interests include: reading, crossword puzzles, bike riding, playing the drums, blues harmonica, playing the electric guitar, downhill skiing, political science, expanding her knowledge base through self-education and searching out her next project.
A music major; led Laura into the appreciation of the beauty of sound and the rhythm of life. Becoming a visual artist was a natural extension of her music. As she has always felt that the visual arts are music to the eyes and each artist has their own rhythm.
Artists who inspire her: Leonardo Da Vinci, August Renoir, Linda Hammond, Carrie Stuart Parks, Gerrit van Honthorst, David Hockney and Edouard Manet as well as Mary Cassatt and Gustave Courbet.
Laura Christie has had her work exhibited in the juried shows of the Oshkosh 150, 2003, the Oshkosh 100, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Her solo exhibits include: Ecartra Gallery (Race Office Supply) – July and August of 2006, Apple Blossom Books – July 2007, Britton’s Walkover Shoes - December 2007 through April 2008. She has been the featured artist at Vendor’s Emporium – June 2007. In addition to her solo shows, she displayed her original work “Soaring Keyboards, Falling Notes” at the Oshkosh Public Museum – February 2005 – which she donated for silent auction to benefit the Oshkosh Symphony. Laura has also donated her work for silent auction to local charities and cancer benefits.
