All art forms are descended from shamanism. The first painters, actors, and dancers were all tribal magicians utilizing these practices as a way of accessing the divine, or the higher self, and ultimately a greater source of knowledge. Today, any art lover can tell you there are deep truths conveyed in any great piece of art.
I consider myself a primal expressionist, a primalist. Primalism describes a working method involving the creative process as well as an understanding about the finished work. I create my work spontaneously allowing my creativity to give birth to the piece without forcing other influences from my more rational mind. Working in this manner opens a door, I believe, to channel information from the psychic unconscious. Any artist can tell you of an incidence where a mistake was made in the creation of a piece of art which in turn worked out, as well as giving the piece some sort of deep symbolic meaning. By working spontaneously I allow this to happen frequently and I have become aware that the capabilities of the unconscious mind are much greater that what has been previously realized. I believe that all art has this quality to some degree and when I view art I like to ask myself why the universe has placed me in front of it. |
